The demand for sustainable energy solutions has been steadily increasing in recent times, driven by concerns over the fuel subsidy removal followed by the constant hike in fuel price and the desire to reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels. As a result, there has been a growing interest in Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) as a cleaner and more affordable fuel option.

CNG is a readily available alternative to traditional gasoline and diesel, and it offers several advantages. It produces significantly lower emissions compared to conventional fuels, which can help mitigate the harmful effects of air pollution and reduce Nigeria's carbon footprint. Moreover, CNG is more cost-effective than gasoline, making it an attractive option for both individuals and businesses looking to cut down on fuel expenses.

Furthermore, the abundance of natural gas reserves in Nigeria makes CNG an attractive proposition for the country's energy landscape. Leveraging this domestic resource for transportation can lead to reduced reliance on imported fuels, promoting energy security and driving economic growth.

Beyond its environmental and economic benefits, CNG also offers operational advantages. Vehicles running on CNG typically experience lower maintenance costs and longer engine life, thanks to the cleaner combustion process. This can be particularly advantageous for fleet operators and businesses with a large number of vehicles.

However, the adoption of CNG as a fuel source has been slowed down by the lack of CNG fuel stations, which makes it difficult for drivers to access this alternative energy source.

The availability of CNG fuel stations plays a vital role in encouraging the adoption of CNG-powered vehicles and ensuring a seamless transition to this sustainable energy source.

The availability of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) fuel stations in Nigeria is a crucial aspect to consider when discussing the country's journey towards sustainable energy. As of now, the number of CNG fuel stations in Nigeria is relatively limited, but there has been a notable increase in recent times.

Currently, the majority of CNG fuel stations in Nigeria are powered by NIPCO Gas LTD and are located in major cities.

NIPCO PLC, recognized for its distribution of White Oil products, Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), and Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) in Nigeria, has established itself as a leader in introducing innovative products and setting new industry benchmarks. NIPCO PLC effectively markets its range of offerings through its strategic business units, namely NIPCO Retail, LPG, and NIPCO Gas.

NIPCO Gas limited is currently operating around 15 CNG stations across Nigeria and has converted over 7,000 petrol vehicles to run on CNG.

NIPCO CNG Conversion Stations and filling stations in Nigeria

Ibafo CNG Station & Conversion Workshop, Lagos-Ibadan Expressway

Kubwa CNG Station, Kubwa: In Abuja, a new CNG station has been established by NIPCO, demonstrating its nationwide growth in the CNG sector. The inauguration of the Auto CNG station in Kubwa, Abuja signifies a notable achievement in the pursuit of providing economical, environmentally-friendly fuel choices for transportation.

Ibadan CNG Station & Conversion Workshop, Ibadan: NIPCO Gas recently commissioned this filling station in Ibadan, Oyo State. The facility is strategically located at the Mobil station near the toll gate on Lagos- Ibadan expressway.

CNG Mother Facility, Oron: The CNG filling station was also recently commissioned at Oron, Akwa Ibom State by NIPCO Gas. The facility is aimed at supporting CNG supplies to the Daughter/Daughter Booster CNG Stations in the south-south region of the country and also enable access of the auto-CNG to vehicles including Keke, cars, buses and trucks.

Other CNG stations include:

1. 2nd East Circular Rd CNG Station, Benin, Edo State.

2. Agbor Road CNG station, Benin, Edo State.

3. Ajaokuta CNG Station, Ajaokuta, Kogi state.

4. Dealer 73 CNG Station & Conversion Workshop, Abuja.

5. Eyean CNG Station & Conversion Workshop, Benin, Edo State.

6. Lagos Road 1 CNG Station, Uselu, Benin, Edo State.

7. Lagos Road 2 CNG Station, Oluku, Benin, Edo State.

8. Okene CNG Station, Lokoja, Kogi State.

9. Sapele Road CNG Station, Benin, Edo State.

10. Textile Mill Road CNG Station, Benin, Edo State.

11. Warri CNG Station, Okolovu, Delta.

These stations primarily cater to commercial vehicles, including buses and taxis, which have been identified as key contributors to air pollution and carbon emissions.

However, through the strategic NNPC-NIPCO partnerships, efforts are being made to expand the availability of CNG fuel stations to other regions of the country. This initiative aims to facilitate the adoption of CNG by long-haul trucks and private vehicle owners, further reducing the carbon footprint of the transportation sector and also leverage Nigeria’s abundant natural gas resources to bring multiple benefits to Nigeria such as creating new business value chains and streams of job opportunities.

According to the NNPC spokesperson, the project would be rolled out in phases. The first phase, comprising 21 CNG stations, will support intra-city transportation and be ready by the first quarter of 2024; while the second phase, comprising 35 CNG stations, will support inter-city transformation and will be ready by late 2024. This will be further complemented by an additional 56 stations to be deployed by NNPC Retail across the country.

The Nigerian government has recognized the importance of sustainable energy and has taken significant initiatives to promote the adoption of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) as an alternative fuel source.

In recent times, the Nigerian government has commissioned quite a number of CNG fueled vehicles for public transportation These measures are expected to accelerate the development of a robust and widespread CNG refueling network across the country.

Establishing CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) fuel stations in Nigeria comes with its fair share of challenges. While CNG is a promising alternative to traditional fossil fuels, the process of setting up the necessary infrastructure poses several hurdles.

One of the major challenges faced is the lack of awareness and understanding of CNG as a fuel source. Many individuals and businesses in Nigeria are still unfamiliar with the benefits and potential of CNG. This lack of awareness often translates to a lack of demand, making it difficult to justify the investment required to establish CNG fuel stations. (embed CNG introduction and benefits link here)

Another obstacle is the limited availability of CNG infrastructure and equipment. From the development of specialized storage tanks to the installation of dispensing units, there is a need for significant investment and expertise. Finding suppliers and manufacturers who can provide reliable and cost-effective equipment can be a challenge, further slowing down the establishment of CNG fuel stations.

Additionally, regulatory frameworks and policies play a crucial role in determining the feasibility and viability of CNG fuel stations. Clear guidelines and incentives from government bodies can encourage private investors to take a leap into the CNG industry. Without supportive policies, potential investors may be hesitant to commit their resources to this emerging sector.

Furthermore, ensuring the safety and security of CNG fuel stations is of paramount importance. Robust safety measures and training programs need to be in place to handle the unique properties and characteristics of CNG. This includes educating staff and customers, implementing proper ventilation systems, and conducting regular inspections to mitigate any potential risks.

Despite these challenges, the increasing global focus on sustainable energy and the potential economic benefits make the establishment of CNG fuel stations in Nigeria a worthy endeavor. By addressing these obstacles through collaborative efforts between the government, private sector, and stakeholders, Nigeria can unlock the full potential of CNG and drive towards a more sustainable energy future.

These initiatives and policies are aimed at not only reducing the nation's dependence on traditional fossil fuels but also mitigating the environmental impact associated with their use.

In conclusion, while the current state of CNG fuel stations in Nigeria is relatively limited, there is a growing recognition of the importance of sustainable energy and the need to transition towards cleaner alternatives. Efforts are underway to increase the availability of CNG refueling infrastructure.
