In a bid to mitigate the effects of petrol subsidy removal on Nigerians, the Federal Government has launched a 5.2 million standard cubic feet per day Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) plant in Lagos.
The plant, situated in the Isolo Industrial Area, Ilasamaja, is the result of a collaborative effort between NNPC Gas Marketing Limited and Transit Gas Nigeria Limited, a subsidiary of Axxela. The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, who inaugurated the facility, emphasized that this milestone marks a significant shift towards the development of affordable, sustainable, and secure energy sources in Nigeria.
Ekpo highlighted that this initiative is part of a broader strategy, which includes the phased rollout of CNG at over 100 NNPC Retail stations nationwide, as well as other joint venture partnerships focused on CNG.
Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, expressed his support for the project, stating that it aligns with his vision for economic growth, job creation, and industrialization in the state. He announced that the state government plans to deploy 2,500 conversion kits and over 2,000 new CNG buses, which are expected to commence operations before the end of the year.
Bolaji Osunsanya, CEO of Axxela, extended his gratitude to all stakeholders, particularly the NNPC, for their consistent commitment to delivering the project.
The NNPC CNG Station Ilasamaja boasts a capacity of 5.2MMscf per day, making it capable of serving vehicles, as well as supplying gas to industries and companies. The facility features dispensing points for filling various types of vehicles, including cars, buses, trucks, and tricycles, with the ability to fill approximately 3,700 cars or 600 trucks/buses daily, ensuring a constant supply of CNG.
