Nigerian solo driver, Pelumi Nubi, undertook a solo journey from London and has successfully reached Lagos after a journey lasting 68 days. On Sunday, April 17th, she arrived in Lagos at 10 o'clock in the morning, and her arrival at the Seme border was marked by a warm welcome from top officials of the Lagos State government, led by the Commissioner for Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Mrs. Toke Benson-Awoyinka, along with her special adviser, Mr. Idris Aregbe. Accompanying them were her parents, students from the University of Lagos (UNILAG), as well as other well-wishers.
Having spent 68 days on her trip, Nubi finally crossed the border from Nigeria to Benin Republic, where she was greeted by representatives from the Lagos State government. Expressing her gratitude to God for a safe journey, she also thanked the state government for their hospitality. During her account of the solo trip, Nubi shared her appreciation for the support received from God and the people of Nigeria, while mentioning the challenges she faced, particularly missing her family and loved ones.
The mother of this creative travel content creator, Mrs. Olubukola Nubi, was visibly elated by her daughter's accomplishment and advised young individuals to remain dedicated and resilient in pursuit of their goals to overcome obstacles and achieve success. Nubi's visit to the University of Lagos, where her father is a lecturer, was complemented by entertainment from Lagos cultural troupes upon her arrival at the Seme border.
Her solo trip commenced in London, United Kingdom on January 31st, 2024, spanning across 17 countries from England to France, Spain, Morocco, and through the vast West Sahara Desert, all by road. Continuing her journey, she drove through Mauritania, Senegal, Gambia, Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Mali, Burkina Faso, Cote d'Ivoire, Ghana, Togo, and Benin before triumphantly reaching Lagos.
In discussions with the media, the special adviser to Governor Sanwo-Olu on Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Mr. Idris Aregbe, praised Pelumi for her remarkable achievement despite encountering an accident during her solo expedition. He reaffirmed the commitment of Governor Babajide Sanwo-olu's administration to support young individuals with creative inclinations to enhance the tourism sector, emphasizing the rising prominence of Lagos State in the realms of entertainment and hospitality.
“We are proud to have a governor who has made significant contributions to the tourism sector, resulting in an increase in the number of young people engaging in it. She is not the first one to do so, nor will she be the last. Our commitment remains unwavering in supporting all Lagosians who have the best interests of Lagos at heart," stated Aregbe.
Following her remarkable feat, the governor has appointed Pelumi Nubi as the Lagos Brand Ambassador, presenting her with a new car, a house, and a personalized license plate number as a gesture of honor.
Also, in recognition of her extraordinary achievement of driving from London to Lagos, Allen Onyema, the Chairman of Air Peace, has praised Solo Driver, Pelumi Nubi, and rewarded her with a complimentary London Business Class return ticket as a token of appreciation for her bravery.
